The original civilization Almost 5,000 years ago the Indus River Valley Civilization arose on the fertile banks of the Indus River in what is today Pakistan. The Harappans had learned to control the river to some extent through massive irrigation projects. This allowed them to establish agricultural communities and eventually spectacular ancient cities.
Unfortunately this surprisingly advanced civilization disappeared by around 1500 BCE and with it the amazing culture it produced. It was rediscovered in the 1920's, but there was little to no information to go on. What is worse is that the writings they produced are un-deciphered. Most of what we now know is based on archeological finds from the ruins of the great cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. |
